I might or might not have dodged a literary bullet (YMMV): We -never- had to
read SILAS MARNER nor anything else by George Elliot.
Walter, OTOH, had to deal with SILAS twice, or perhaps three times due to different
schools/classes.
To his credit, when I read him the two Robert Benchley parodies of Dreiser,
he loved them.
We have never gone rowboating together. [FeG]
I didn't mind assigned reading in high school; I was a voracious reader.
I remember reading _The House of 7 Gables_ (or however that title
actually reads), and not understanding a word of it. I didn't care.
When assigned _David Copperfield_, I had already read it. We read the
Scottish play by Shakespeare, and I enjoyed that (and the teacher
explained what was going on adequately for her classful of 17 year olds,
as well). No _Moby Dick_ (I had tried to read it when I was 12 or 13,
and was bored stiff long before the end of the book, so I read the last
few pages and quit). No _Silas Marner_ (I did enjoy the PBS version a
few years ago).

And PENROD AND SAM.
My mother was a member of Youngstown's Bar Auxiliary. She met the wife of another
lawyer whose surname was Penrod. "Please tell me your husband's first name
is Sam," Mother begged.
And so it was.
I had an omnibus edition of Penrod which also included PENROD JASHBER. I
read it so long ago I forget almost everything. I suppose I should try
to find it and read it again.
